Waddington Cemetery

** COMPLETE **

Waddington is a small settlement in the Selwyn District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand. It is close to the railway settlement of Sheffield, so close that just a few plots of land separate the two townships. Waddington was named by and for William Waddington, who purchased part of the Homebush run previously held by John Deans and laid out the township in 1873.

At present there are no facilities, as such, in Waddington. The shop, butcher, school and church are long gone. Now the township is but a small collection of houses, old and new, that share the facilities of nearby Sheffield, which is just one kilometre away.

The first burial in Waddington Cemetery took place in 1882, however the earliest gravestone still standing (alone at the back of the cemetery) is dated 1883.

Robert George FLEMING – early Canterbury pioneer farmer.

A recent change to the cemetery map may hold the answer. Several areas at the back left of the cemetery have been cordoned off with posts and chain and the cemetery map sign has been updated to note these areas as containing “unmarked graves“.

I have uncovered several Waddington burials where the gravestones are no longer in situ and these are noted in RED.

Unfortunately, several of the older, grander stones were knocked over or smashed by the recent 7.1 earthquake that struck the area. I have endeavoured to capture images of these stones in the event they are someday removed.

Robert arrived in New Zealand in 1856, age 15, aboard the ship “Isabella Hercus”. He was travelling with his brother, George Warren Fleming. Both were sent  from the UK to stay with their Uncle Richard John Philip Fleming.

One of the early Canterbury settlers, Robert farmed at “Willows” near Sheffield, which once formed part of the Deans’ run. He married Mary Anne Murphy in 1864 and they went on to have 8 children, two of whom are named on his headstone (Emily and Alfred George). Robert is mentioned in the invaluable family history resource “The Macdonald Dictionary of Canterbury Biographies” (Canterbury Museum’s Documentary Research Centre holds the microfiche).

FRASER, Alexander (d. 22nd April, 1924).

Alexander Fraser was born in 1842 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where he was educated and then trained in farming. The Cyclopedia of New Zealand states he came to New Zealand aboard the ship “Tudor” in 1865, however passenger lists make no mention of this name. The year he arrived, Alexander purchased the first portion of his property, “Crawford Farm”, in Waddington, which consisted of “unimproved Crown land”.

  1. Even though I knew of my ancesters who lived in Waddington, it was great to see their headstones.

However the one of my gg grandparents John and Mary Armstrong is not included in your photos. Their headstone is right at the back of the cemetery.

Hopefully it was not damaged in the earthquake.

    • Hi Vivien,

I have almost finished photographing Waddington cemetery – I shall finish it in a couple of weeks.

However, I don’t recall an Armstrong burial. If you could give me a date of death and the date you visited the grave I can check to see what has happened to the headstone.

    • No problem, Michelle, I’ll send these in the next half hour. The Waddington cemetery will be completed this weekend, and I will keep my eyes peeled for any Askew burials.

Please consider a small donation, this goes to the cemeteries and churches that have been damaged to help replace the old stones and repair buildings damaged in the recent 7.1 earthquake.

I hope you like the gravestone images and that perhaps they’ll even add a little to your family history knowledge.

  3. After reading the article in The Press, 16/4/2011, I looked up your website, what a great job you are doing.
On our fathers death, Melville Robin Black, we placed his head stone at Waddington between his parents, Robert and Ella, nee Jenkins.
Our mother Betty Helene Black, nee Carr died in 1991, and her headstone had been placed in the Waikari Cementry where she was born and breed. Waikari was not a revelant place for our father’s headstone, but to us Waddington was, as he lived near Homebush most of his life and this is where his family came from. Hopefuly our future generations will be able to trace their ancesters headstones even though they are apart.

    • Gaynor, thank you for your kind comments. I will make a note to “link” the two headstones when I photograph Waikari. That way anyone who is searching can make an instant connection. Thanks for the information, it’s exactly what I hope to gain from blog visitors. If you have any genealogical information you want to share alongside your family stones, please let me know.

  4. You are a hero!! This work is amazing. I’m descended from the Frasers of Waddington via his brother James who also came out from Aberdeenshire. Another brother John also came out. James and his wife Jane nee Berry along with John Fraser are buried at the old cemetary in Rangiora. I do have a photo of the Waddington Fraser’s if you wanted to add that too the headstone photo?
Do you have a direct debit bank account for a donation. It won’t be much but it might help you keep going with your work. We have been dislocated because of the earth quake so can’t afford much. Petrol is impossable and if I can give a little and hoefully everyone else will.
    Keep up the good work.

    • Hi Brenda, and thank you so much for your kind comments. I’m so sorry to hear you have been so badly affected by the quakes, I hope life will get back to some sort of normality for your and your family soon – at least a ‘new normality’. Your generous donation offer is fantastic, and any amount is much welcomed. I hope the project will be ongoing so no rush! I will email you. 🙂 The donations are all going to the churches damaged in the earthquakes, I do the project off my own back, it’s a passion!

I would love to have any info and especially photographs of any of those interred at the cemeteries listed! I want to bring the headstones to life with as much information as possible. You can email me information you are happy to share on the blog at leggatt@xtra.co.nz or moorfnz@gmail.com.

Again, thanks for your kind comments and all the best to you and yours during this trying time.

      Stay safe.

    • Hello John,

As far as I can see there are no remains of gravestones surviving on the surface. The plots were cordoned off about six months ago and noted as areas of “unmarked graves”. Some of the area was previously covered by undergrowth so it could be that some gravestone remains are buried in situ. I will have a closer look for you but won’t disturb the ground. It may be that Selwyn District Council have plans to excavate for headstones, I will contact them to find out.

    • John

This morning I received an email from Selwyn District Council regarding my query about recently discovered unmarked graves. It doesn’t look as if there is anything remaining of the gravestones in those areas.

Prior to recent work in the Waddington cemetery a thorough search was carried out to locate any headstones or pieces of headstones, but nothing was found.

I’m sorry we couldn’t find anything.

  7. Hi Helen
Since you have put Waddington on the map, the amount of contacts has been amazing. Keep up the good work.I wish I was able to help.

    • Thanks Michelle, you have helped enormously by providing the Askew information, thanks!

I’d love to know about any new connections you have made. I had wondered whether to ask permission to post contact emails of relatives researching a grave next to each gravestone listing – what does everyone think?

  8. Hi Helen
It may be ok,but you have to be aware spammers go searching for email addresses. Maybe put the name of the person researching and then if someone wants to make a contact they would have to ask you to forward the address on. But just see what others have to say first.

    Regards

    • Yes, spam was my concern, and privacy issues. Perhaps I’ll tag each one that has a researcher connected with it with a link to page where people can contact me for more info or a hook-up.

  10. Hi Helen

Could I please have a copy of Eva Vincent’s gravestone she is the elder sister of my great-grandmother but died as a baby. Thank you so much for what you are doing. A couple of my relatives were buried in Barbadoes St in Chch, I have heard that it was severely affected by liquifaction, so I am not hopeful of finding a gravestone there, which is sad.

  12. Hey there,

I was just looking over this web page i think you are an amazing person for doing what you do.
I am apart of St John and we have a Youth camp out in Waddington. In March one of our Youth Leaders (and also my best friend) passed away from an Asthma attack. She spent alot of time out at Waddington and we have a lot of memories out there.
Over the past few months we have been talking about how we would all love a place to go to just sit and chat to her and a place where we can be with her and we all love how beautiful the cemetery is out in Waddington.
Just wanted to know if new headstones are still being put there as ive heard that no new headstones will be put out there.

Hope to hear from you soon.
    Thanks

    Tessa.

    • Hi Tessa,

Many thanks for your kind comments and I’m sorry to hear of your friend’s passing. Waddington Cemetery is indeed a peaceful and lovely cemetery to wander around and sit and admire the views.

As far as I am aware burials and headstones may still be placed in Waddington, we had a funeral here just last week. The best people to speak to regarding this would be Selwyn Council’s cemetery department:

      Phone:
      Rolleston (03) 347-2800 or
      Darfield (03) 318-8338

      Hope that helps
      Helen

  14. Hi
Good work. Over the years I have taken a number of photos in the Waddintom Cemetery, especiaially of the Newsomes and the Hawkes. My Grandad and great grandad are buried there. You have no pics of their graves and yet they are in pretty good condition.

    Cheers

  15. Hallo,

I have a number of relatives in the cemetary which are not listed here. W A Hawke is one. His grave is in good condition and has a clearly readable gravestone not listed here. His wife is there also, Isobel Hawke (nee Newsome). Her grave is also there and very readable. There are other Hawkes as well. You have not listed them. My great great grandfather, Daniel Hawke, and his wife are also buried at Waddington, but their graves are not so readable.

I have photos if anyone is interested.

    Cheers

  16. Hello,

I wonder if anyone knows anything about the grave of an Mrs Ellen Baxter (nee Logan)? She was my earliest ancestor to immigrate to NZ c.1858 (my great-great-great-grandmother). My Gran, Mary Jackson (nee Baxter) always insisted she was buried at Waddington in the very early 1900s, possibly with her husband William who died earlier (maybe 1880s-90s)

There could be other Baxter relatives buried in the area also.

    Thanks, Scott Jackson

    • Hi Scott,

Ellen was indeed buried in Waddington Cametery. Unfortunately, she may be in one of several now unmarked graves (i.e. headstones have gone) as I do not have an image for a headstone for her. I live right near the cemetery. However, the Selwyn cemetery database holds the following information:

      Record: ID19124
      Surname: Baxter
      First names: Ellen
      Age: 74 years
      Date of interment” 18/12/1906
      Gender: Female
      Cemetery: Waddington
      Beam: N
      Plot type: Grave
      Plot number: 7
      Row: 16
      Denomination: Presbyterian
      Clergy: Rev Kidd

When I am next there, I shall check the beam and plot number to make doubly sure.

It would appear that her husband, William, was buried not far away in Glentunnel at the South Malvern Cemetery. I do have an image of his headstone which I will send to your email address.

      His burial details are:

      Record: ID13769
      Surname: Baxter
      First names: William
      Age: 63 years
      Date of interment: 26/09/1896
      Date of death: 26/09/1896
      Gender: Male
      Cemetery: South Malvern
      Beam: N
      Plot type: Grave
      Plot number: 1
      Row: 72
      Denomination: Presbyterian
      Clergy: Rev James Baxter

      Hope this helps

  17. Thank you very much Helen, that’s very helpful as I was planning to go look out that way and would have been disappointed to not find Ellen’s plot. I’ve always been interested in her as although she emigrated from Northern Ireland with her husband and 4 year old son, she was obviously a ‘person of colour’ to some degree which is slightly mysterious.

    Cheers, Scott Jackson
