Waddington is a small settlement in the Selwyn District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand. It is close to the railway settlement of Sheffield, so close that just a few plots of land separate the two townships. Waddington was named by and for William Waddington, who purchased part of the Homebush run previously held by John Deans and laid out the township in 1873.

At present there are no facilities, as such, in Waddington. The shop, butcher, school and church are long gone. Now the township is but a small collection of houses, old and new, that share the facilities of nearby Sheffield, which is just one kilometre away.

The first burial in Waddington Cemetery took place in 1882, however the earliest gravestone still standing (alone at the back of the cemetery) is dated 1883.

A recent change to the cemetery map may hold the answer. Several areas at the back left of the cemetery have been cordoned off with posts and chain and the cemetery map sign has been updated to note these areas as containing “unmarked graves“.

I have uncovered several Waddington burials where the gravestones are no longer in situ and these are noted in RED.

 

Unfortunately, several of the older, grander stones were knocked over or smashed by the recent 7.1 earthquake that struck the area. I have endeavoured to capture images of these stones in the event they are someday removed.

FLEMING, Robert George (d. 19th May, 1906).

Robert arrived in New Zealand in 1856, age 15, aboard the ship “Isabella Hercus”. He was travelling with his brother, George Warren Fleming. Both were sent  from the UK to stay with their Uncle Richard John Philip Fleming.

One of the early Canterbury settlers, Robert farmed at “Willows” near Sheffield, which once formed part of the Deans’ run. He married Mary Anne Murphy in 1864 and they went on to have 8 children, two of whom are named on his headstone (Emily and Alfred George). Robert is mentioned in the invaluable family history resource “The Macdonald Dictionary of Canterbury Biographies” (Canterbury Museum’s Documentary Research Centre holds the microfiche).

FRASER, Alexander (d. 22nd April, 1924).

Alexander Fraser was born in 1842 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where he was educated and then trained in farming. The Cyclopedia of New Zealand states he came to New Zealand aboard the ship “Tudor” in 1865, however passenger lists make no mention of this name. The year he arrived, Alexander purchased the first portion of his property, “Crawford Farm”, in Waddington, which consisted of “unimproved Crown land”.

HUMM, Maria Louise (d. 8th February, 1934). Born Maria Louise AUSTIN on 25th June 1869 in Springton, Canterbury, New Zealand. Maria’s father was John AUSTIN, born 1835 in England. He married Mary BUXTON in 1864.

Maria’s husband, Samuel HUMM, is also listed on her headstone. He died in February 1934.

“Marriage Notes for Samuel & Maria – “A wedding that attracted a considerable amount of attent ion took place in our Waddington Church on 31st May, when Mr Samuel Humm was united in matrim onial bonds to Miss M. Austin, Rev.T.H. Lyon tying the knot. The bridegroom is a son of Bro.H umm, one of our honoured local preachers; and the parents of the bride are much respected i n the district. The bride wore a handsome costume, which a lady friend informs me was dark sh ade of rose. She was attended by her niece and Miss Martin. Mr David Humm acted as groomsman . After the ceremony about sixty guests partook of the hospitality of the bride’s parents a t their house.” – Source: “The New Zealand Primitive Methodist” July 1, 1893. The niece wa s Annie Ethel Austin, daughter of Richard & Sarah Owen. Before 1893 Maria was registered a s a Dress Maker. Maria’s home in 1941 was at 33 Norton Road, Frankton Junction. She is burri ed in Plot 57/17 Beam Pt in Waddington Cemetery.”

HUMM, William (d. 30th May, 1915).

“Mr Humm, who has been a farmer at Waddington for the past quarter of a century, is well-known and highly esteemed in the Malvern district. Every Christmas Day a family gathering is held at the old home, and our illustration is from a photo, taken on the last occasion, when there were present Mr and Mrs Humm, their eleven sons and daughters, their grand-children and other relatives.”
Additional notes: The Humm family were farming in the Waddington district from about the late 1870s. On this occasion it is a family gathering on Christmas Day 1903.

Thomas S. Innes, son of William Innes, was born at Pigeon Bay, in 1872, and was brought up on a farm in Banks’ Peninsula. In 1898 he moved to Waddington, where he leased Glencairn Farm, a property of 150 aces. Two years later he purchased a second homestead farm, “Fairleigh”, which was run by the Innes family until the late 1970’s.

LORD, John (d. 28th August, 1923). Born in Burnley, Lancashire, England in 1851, John Lord came to New Zealand aboard the “Cathcart” in 1874. He was a trained cabinet maker. After six months in Christchurch he moved inland to Waddington where he set up a building business. He married Sarah Rose (who was also aboard the Cathcart) in 1876 and, according to The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Canterbury Provincial District] had five sons and three daughters. It may be a flight of fancy but perhaps John and Sarah met and fell in love onboard the Cathcart.

Elizabeth was born in 1849 in Redruth, Cornwall, UK, to Henry and Mary Ann ARTHUR. She married Richard Henry LUKE in Redruth, Cornwall and a year later on 27 June 1874 set sail on the Merope for Port Lyttleton. Elizabeth’s unmarried sister Mary Jane ARTHUR came with them – possibly to help Elizabeth as she was pregnant with their first child (birth reg’d 1874 in NZ – Elizabeth Merope!). Over the next 11 years Elizabeth & Richard had at least 6 more children and Elizabeth may have died during the birth of her last child Walter (born and died in 1885).
