Listing Updates and Upcoming New Info!

Hello again family historians and blog readers,

It’s hard to believe we’re in the second half of 2012 already. Hunting Kiwis has now been going for nearly 2 years (October 2010) and boy does my camera know it, with almost 2,000 headstones photographed and recorded. Eleven cemeteries have been completed and six are in progress.

You, too, have been a great help with your comments and information – please keep it coming. And don’t forget, if you have a remittance man in your family tree please let me know. In some exciting news, I shall soon be posting what will be perhaps the only comprehensive list of New Zealand remittance men on the web – watch this space.

The last few days I have spent adding to existing listings, particularly for Kimberley Cemetery and Cust/West Eyreton (Mairaki) Cemetery and have more trips planned to complete Hanmer Springs and Wairaki in the near future (a good excuse to stop off at the hot pools!).

This weekend I spent a day at the gorgeous and remote Church of the Holy Innocents at Mount Peel.

Unfortunately, the old church, built in 1868 from locally quarried stone, was damaged in the September, 2010, 7.1 earthquake, and its main stained glass window has been lost. However, the church is safe to enter and I spent a glorious, sunny Cantabrian winters day photographing the headstones of the Acland family and many of their homestead workers and relations. The listing will be uploaded in the coming weeks.
