Can it really be September? Where did August go? So much to do, so little time!
New Cemeteries
After a well-earned break in Samoa, I’ve hit the cemetery trail again, with a lot of help from my parents. Three (yes, THREE!) new cemeteries have been photographed and will be available online just as quickly as I can get them all listed. Those three cemeteries are Alford Forest, Mt. Somers and Ruapuna. Check back often for progress.

A Talk to the NZSG
In the meantime I’m working on a presentation I’m giving to the New Zealand Society of Genealogists in Christchurch next week. I hope my nerves calm by then, it’s been a while since I addressed an audience.
New History Course in Christchurch
If you’re able to get to Christchurch you might be interested to learn of a 4-week course being held at the Canterbury Workers Education Association (WEA) starting 18th October. For details check out the WEA website.
The course is being run by Alexandra Gilbert, Secretary of the Friends of Linwood Charitable Trust. It will focus on Linwood Cemetery – why the cemetery was built, the spiritual shape of a growing city, social movements, and wars, disasters and illness. It will appeal to those interested in local history, those who have ancestors in the cemetery, genealogists and those considering and reflecting on the preservation of the heritage of Christchurch.
Find and Fix
Some more exciting news. Having been tasked with finding a headstone for a blog reader who lives in Australia we managed to locate the cemetery AND the headstone. Unfortunately, it was bad news for the family. The headstone (an obelisk) was severely damaged in the earthquakes. However, the good news is that the family have decided to restore it and we’re working on getting quotes. This is the first “find and fix” project and we’re all delighted at the results. Once the restoration has begun I’ll furnish you all with the details of the search.
