Kirwee – Public Cemetery

COMPLETE!

The first burial in Kirwee Public Cemetery was in 1879.

At that time the cemetery was laid out in four sections – Episcopalian, Catholic and two other denominations.

Today just three denominations are mapped – Anglican, Non-Conformist and Presbyterian.

Since its opening, the cemetery has shrunk in size. Some of the land was sectioned off for grazing c. 1896 because so few burials took that place no funds were being received.

Malvern County Council took over the maintenance of Kirwee Public Cemetery in 1921 and it is now under the control of Selwyn District Council.

Even today the cemetery, the entrance of which is found off Hoskyns Road in Kirwee (a gravel track), houses few stones.

Kirwee Public Cemetery – sparsely populated

There is, of course, one other cemetery serving Kirwee in the grounds of St George’s Church.

Other nearby cemeteries include St Matthew’s at Courtenay, Kimberley (nr Darfield), Waddington, and St Peter’s / Kowhai Bush Cemetery in Springfield.
